Glee Mistakes Lebanese For Lesbian

Dear Glee, this might be your idea of a joke but it’s not really funny.

As part of their “Born This Way” episode, the cast of Glee was asked to make T-shirts with a quality they hate about themselves but wouldn’t change because they were “born this way” and one character saw it fit to confuse – yet again – Lebanese with Lesbian.

The same character, Brittany, goes on in the conversation about how Santana is “Lebanese” and she, Brittany, is “bicurious”.

The joke is seriously getting old. And as a Lebanese, having my nationality mixed up with a sexual orientation isn’t really flattering. So dear Glee, get a grip.

  1. Well, the point of this was to illustrate how being gay and one’s nationality are both innate things that one has no control over. The whole episode made fun of people’s ideas that they aren’t happy being who they are. I think it’s important to keep that in mind.

    • I got the point of the episode but I’m addressing the content of the “joke” here. Lebanese and Lesbian are always mixed up in pop culture, it’s becoming ridiculous. Salma Hayek was once asked about her last name and she replied: “my dad is Lebanese”.
The anchor thought she was lesbian…

      • Well, just think of it this way, pop culture has always constantly made the jokes of “that’s gay”, which I’ve learned that I just have to deal with. It’ll be a long time before that changes.

When someone is speaking quickly, its easy to make mistakes. As well it gave Santana an easy out because no one else had to know when Brit made the shirt that Santana was a lesbian. And if you’ll notice, she was able to wear it. Meaning she felt it far less embarassing to be Lebanese. Plus, she chose to claim to be Lebanese instead of Latina or whatever it is her true nationality is, which she seems to be truly proud of. If anything, you should be happy.

  6. I found that whole thing offensive….. I am both lebanese and gay and feel that many shows such as glee and others in pop culture is produced in a “white” perspective on life. racial groups and sexual minorities are constantly made fun of and hurt during these episodes which not only provoke stereotypes but also create an object of gaze. If you do not fit the profile of a white heterosexual you are immediately made the object of “gaze” a spectacle for the westerners. I’m sick and tired of this…. Just look at the protagonists and the stereotypes that glee reinforces: 1) sassy black girl, 2) flaming homosexual, 3) helpless “disabled”….. Yet we are never quick to mention how the owners of production force their own ideologies upon their viewers

    • I agree with this. I’m finding the storylines in the show becoming more and more sort of “shove it down my throat” stuff. I mean, I’m not gay and I was compassionate with what Kurt was going through at first. But now, it’s getting pretty ridiculous. They need to focus more on what makes them good (the music) and less on a pointless storyline that’s not interesting to say the least.

Honestly we should be flattered that our nationality is used as code to champion a great cause.
People should lighten up, appreciate the joke as it is.

Also another point, the episode was about “Born this way” which includes the lyrics: You’re Lebanese, you’re Orient. So I’m sure if we’re to keep with Brittany’s quirky mind, she thought it meant lesbian. Guys remember she also mistook being pregnant with having a stork build a nest near her window!

I’m loving Glee more and more…

i understand how it fit in the scenario but it’s been way overdone. And it’s not power to us, Lebanese, it’s getting ridiculous – regardless of what you personally think about homosexuality.

      • Wow. Unbelievable. I’m Lebanese, my Father’s parents both came from Lebanon, and I remember growing up with ignorant neighbors. My girlfriend lived across the street, and her father kept referring to us as Lesbian – the first time he was probably just being his stupid self – he probably didn’t know any better – it was the 70’s, later to hide his ignorance and embarrassment he turned it into a short running joke. He was a moron and a bigot. But this wasn’t a joke at the expense of the Lebanese people it was a joke on Brittany being stupid.

Actually, I’m offended by your finding this scene offensive. The only reason to find this offensive is because you find the word Lesbian offensive and perceive that to be the joke. That wasn’t the joke, it wasn’t meant to be a joke. Do you really think that those of us watching thought it was funny because Glee used the words interchangeably or because once again Brittany is a moron?

Don’t pretend otherwise and then try to defend your false offense. And what is the joke anyway? I’d really like to know that. Is it an actual joke? In my case, it wasn’t actually a joke, it was ignorant people hearing me say Lebanese, not knowing what that was, and immediately thinking I said Lesbian – and then of course they thought that was hilarious – totally missing the point of their incredible stupidity. All the spelling mistakes hurt my eyes, plus it’s offensive to gays and lesbians. If you let it be there, it makes you an accomplice to gay hate. Yes, it really is that simple.

    2) As mentioned before, I know what Lebanese means in its original sense, but did not know the joke. What’s the matter? you scared of the lesbians? Suddenly lesbians are going to appropriate your whole country’s name and start confusing the world? Mum, I have to tell you, I’m Lebanese. Mmm.. don’t see it happening.

    3) You should be grateful a show as huge in pop culture as GLEE even writes Lebanese on a tshirt. Thank Lady Gaga, as well. Free publicity, free tourism. Having said that, if this is the reaction to Lesbians.. I’m in no rush to go.

Soon enough, the hype will die down and things will go back to how they used to be. Changing people’s mentalities does not happen with a TV show, it happens with education and how they are raised. If someone is raised and taught o hate, they will hate – regardless of whether they are right or wrong – because that is the only thing they know how to do.

Texas jokes have been overdone too, but I’m not going to catch feelings everytime a show makes fun of Texas. And yeah, younger generations are pretty swayed by entertainment. All it takes is one show telling them that there is nothing wrong with being different and those kids will believe that for the rest of their lives and vise versa.

Don’t underestimate the power of a show like glee. Even if all the letters aren’t real or the numbers are exaggerated, its still saved a few lives and those are worth something.

  26. Just stumbled past this in a hunt for a t-shirt saying Lebanese that I want to buy.

I went to Glee live today in London – and it was awesome. There were so many people wearing teeshirts with all sorts of stuff on, highlighting their differences – it was really refreshing. If that is not changing peoples perceptions of the world I don’t know how you can say anything does at all. Its a lot of young people that watch the show, and if it shows them that being gay or lesbian is ok – then I am all for it.

As for the joke of Lebanese/Lesbian – you keep complaining that it is an old joke, aired in the 80’s. Has it occurred to you that most of the watchers of Glee are less than 25 years old? Therefore it’s new to them? Most things have been said before – most jokes are just recycled in new packaging for the next generation, which is exactly what has happened here.

If a joke on glee gets you this angered enough to write about… you perhaps should become a politician or campaigner for more worthwhile causes such as poverty or gay rights and utilise your skills there – its certainly a better way of spending energy rather than criticising a highly rated show that highlights important issues to young people in a way that makes them listen.

You are SO hurt by small comments made about your culture on a tv show? Honestly, talk a walk in the shoes of someone who is gay and feel what it is like for the way YOU were born to literally be bashed every single day by the media.
Also, don’t you think it is a bit much to complain about one comment from a show that has already had such a positive effect on the younger generation of today? It is people like you that are holding our society back from progressing towards the better. Get your head out of your ass and realize that there are people with bigger issues than your small offense toward a two second comment about the culture you take part in. People are dying. People are beaten to death because of the way they were born whether it be because of the color of their skin, the clothes they choose to wear, the gender they identify with, or the religion they practice. We all get hurt. There is always someone trying to take you down, make you feel bad so that they can feel better about themselves. Glee is one thing that is trying to work against that. So stfu and get off your high horse.

For me, Glee promotes learning to be yourself, and love who you are!! it’s a fight back against the bullies who try and force people to conform to what society believes is “normal” and promotes individuality! Personally, i couldn’t think of a better message to send out to the world!!

  28. 1. I find it a very odd coincidence that the Lesbian/Lebanese joke and the song “Born This Way” were in the SAME Glee episode. Clearly glee is highlighting and advertising the word “Lebanese” in the lyrics.

    2. Why did Santana keep the shirt on? My guess: “We are Lebanese, we are orient”, it was another encouragement to Lebanese people to accept that they are Arabs, although they deny it. Says gaga of course.

    3. Now this is the serious part. I can’t write everything because the Lebanese internet is being watched and spied at by the country “below us”. I think that this mockery is related between our nationality and the religion of Glee’s director including his support to the country “below us”. This is not the first time that this happens.

In the TV show “Friends”: A “wannabe” restaurant owner doesn’t know the first thing about food because he is Lebanese, says Monica one of the lead characters.

All in all, my precious Lebanon is living a reputation which it doesn’t deserve, and I had to watch the Lebanese/Lesbian scene like 10 times to believe my eyes. And not only was I offended, but I was hurt too. It has always been my dream to see Lebanon rise with its beauty and pride, and being a glee fan really stings.

Gaga uses the word for its scansion; she is not making a comment on Lebanese ethnicity (which wouldn’t make sense lyrically, by the way). Glee rehashed an innocent joke about similar-sounding words. No one is making an affront to the pride of Lebanon, though it does seem to this casual observer that the OP and the above commenter just dislike the association with lesbianism which probably just illustrates a very different view of the world to America and Europe (one that is mired in religious thinking about right and wrong), not to mention Nationalism (which in my opinion, in any country, is almost always a dangerous meme built on thought-terminating cliches).

The queer society in this country specifically is “offended” to a much larger extent everyday in schools, the workplace, the political scene as well as in public in general.

  38. hi, I am said lebanese girlfriend.
I honestly do not see the hub bub behind the words. They sound the same. Hell, I’ve mistakenly called lebanese people lesbians in front of my very conservative muslim father before.

Also, if you actually look at the Qur’an (assuming you are Muslim, as the majority of Lebanese people that I’ve come into contact with are Muslim), there is nothing in there that banishes or ostracizes lesbians. Which is still quite bigoty of them still.

What I am trying to say is, salam. we mean no harm, i promise you will not catch the gay if the word ‘lesbian’ is mistaken for the word ‘lebanese’ or vice versa.

Take a big sip of calm down juice, bro, it’s alright.
